It’s a type of shell fish which you need to put in your mouth and suck the meat out from the shell. I had absolutely no idea what it’s called in English, anyone can enlightened me? I am not a huge fan of this basically because I will be frustrated if I can suck nothing out from the shell even when I suck until my face gone red, while I see others can enjoy eating it. Well, guess I am not a good sucker eh? Anyway, luckily for me that day, the ba li dong is very fresh, and I can suck all of them out easily! 7.0/10

Although we are here for seafood, it won’t hurt to have some vegetables eh? However, not all Thai people are good in cooking Thai food (just as many Malaysians don’t know how to cook), and luckily, there are a few restaurant here that serve some nice Thai food.

The owner of this stall actually shifted few place when they just started business, and finally they had settle down here at Restaurant 398 at Taman Intan for some time. I still love their Thai style steamed fish here. They use charcoal to make sure the soup of the fish is always hot. You can also always ask for extra soup if you wish, as that’s what I do all the time, as I absolutely love it. Thanks to the chef choosing not to skip the ingredients, the soup is wonderful, hot spicy and sour enough, although there’s sometime I wish it was even more spicy. Besides, they do have white cabbage under the fish, which is really nice. 8.0/10

Besides the fish, the otak-otak here is something I love too. Again, thai style otak-otak is totally different from Malaysia version one, as they use more seafood to cook it instead of fish only. Thai style otak-otak usually have prawns, squid, fried fish and sometimes even crab meat inside. Marvelous! I actually love the otak-otak itself more rather than all the seafood in it. 8.3/10

Stir Fried vegetables with salted fish is quite good too. 7.5/10

Thai style fried clams with basil leaf is good, as I always love this type of cooking style. In Chinese the restaurant was read as “We Ye Tong”, or “Bi Ah Dong” in Hokkien, but in English it was known as Mabrown, and which I always read as “Mabolo” when I was still small, err….what? Well, in any case, this restaurant had started their business for a long time already, as long as Restaurant Sai Gao, and if not mistaken, they are 1 of the 1st restaurant in Sungai Petani that provide air-corn room for their customers.

However, in terms of customers, Sai Gao always had the upper hand. I had also notice most of the time Sai Gao is the first choice of most customers, and only if they can’t find a place there then they will only opt for Restaurant Bi Ah Dong. Besides, whenever Sai Gao is off, the business here will be tremendously good.

However, I still love both restaurant, and I find that both of them got their specialties that make me always come back to them.

They had a few ready cooked dishes, such as those you found in economy rice stall, and the beancurd below is 1 of them. Although it’s cold already (duh obviously) but it still taste nice. Even though the skin is not crispy, but the gravy is good. I take it as an appetizer before my meal. 7.5/10

The eggplant is another ready made dish. However, I find that it’s so-so only as it’s a bit tasteless. But still, ok la. 6.2/10

Although Char Siew and Roasted Pork are their specialty, but it’s not good. Well, it’s not that bad, but when you claim it’s you specialty and always promote to your customer, your customer will except something really good, which is not the case here. The roasted pork is just plain normal, but the Char Siew is lacking of taste, not sweet enough. 5.5/10

Ahh, my favorite dish, also 1 of their specialty, steamed fish with dao cheong. Restaurant Yoong Kee had been here at Jalan Pasar, Bukit Mertajam ever since when my mum was in her early working days, if her memory servers her right…….

The restaurant is small and old, but this never stopped people from coming to them. However, since it’s always packed, I really had to complained that it’s not really fun to have dinner there especially these days when the weather is god damned hot! All of us were sweating badly and we swear on them inside our heart on why they don’t want to invest a bit more on fan to make their customer feel more comfortable. It might be better if we came later, but since we arrive there around 6pm, the sun is still godly bright and awesomely hot…..grrr!

However, they do serve some nice Teochew food, luckily.

We start our hot dinner with a good bowl of hot pork and peanut soup. It taste good, and only if pork tail was used instead of pork ribs and lean meat. 6.5/10

The stir fried tofu here is highly recommended. The tofu was deep fried until the skin is very crispy while the inside maintain soft. A simple dish but was cook to perfection! 7.5/10

The pai kuat ong (sweet sour pork ribs) here is goodie stuff too. The pork is deep fried outside, and the meat is tender and soft. The sweetness is just good enough for you to increase your carbs (rice) intake. 7.3/10

Last but not least, the most recommended dish here is the Teowchew style steamed stingray. I saw many table order this type of steamed fish too, however, I must say I am sorta disappointed with it. Reason is the soup given is way way way too little. I am thinking did they spilled out most of the soup when they bring it out from the kitchen or what that is it that lead to such little soup. The soup do taste good, but it’s not that awesome yet. Maybe the cook is having a bad day? Besides, the fish was a bit overcooked too. I might give them another chance in the future though. 6.5/10

Overall, the food here is not bad. They seems to have many loyal eaters, and almost every time I pass by the restaurant, it’s full house. So if you are out of luck, you might have to stand and wait for a place since tables are limited.

Total Damage: RM40

Operating Hours: 11am – 3pm and 6pm – 10pm

Location: Jalan Pasar, Bukit Mertajam, Penang

Google Map:

Teluk Kumbar Good Friend Seafood @ Penang

Balik Pulau

Chinese

Cuisine

Dai Chao

Food and Drinks

Location

Malaysia

Penang

Restaurant (Cuisine)

beach

chi lei

clam

crab

Dinner

Food

non Halal

Satay

seafood

stingray

Teluk Kumbar

Thanks to Axian, I get to know this place, the famous Good Friend Seafood at far far other end of George Town, Teluk Kumbar. Since I don’t know where the hell is Teluk Kumbar, it took me more than an hour to reach there from George Town. I blame my stupid GPS to the max as it didn’t ask me to U-turn but lead me to make a huge huge round until I need to pass by Queensbay Mall twice! Duhhhh!

However, upon reaching there, it makes me feel awesome. Although the beach here ain’t the best in Penang, neither is the sand is white and soft, nor the sea is crystal clear, but it do gives a very nice feeling. Firstly it’s a fish village, and the owner of Good Friend Seafood are fisherman for the past few generations. You can see loads of fishing boat line up along the beach. Secondly, the restaurant is located at the beach itself, and being able to dine at a beach is really wonderful!

I was told that besides the extremely fresh seafood, the satay here is good stuff too.

And yes, it doesn’t disappoints me. The satay came at rm0.70 per stick, but the size is bigger than those outside. Besides, it doesn’t come with any sauce since the gravy was already on top of the satay itself. 7.2/10

Stir fried crunchy vegetables, nothing special, but just nice to open our stomach for the incoming seafood. 6.1/10

Chi Lei might not be everyone’s meat, but its good for me as long it’s fresh. The reasons is it’s damned hard to find really really fresh clams and even if 99% fresh clams are used to cook, it will still have some bad smell and spoil the whole dish! However, I decided to give myself another chance to have clam soup here. Reasons is I trusted that fisherman will only choose the freshest seafood to cook, and I am lucky that I made the correct decisions.

The clams used is really really really fresh. The whole bowl of soup doesn’t gives even a minor mud taste or anything, it’s just taste fresh and sweet! 4 of us basically bottom up the whole bowl of soup. 7.8/10

The sweet and sour crab here is not bad too, goes really well with rice. 7.0/10

1 of the must order dish here is the Siam style steamed Stingray. It’s certainly 1 of the best steamed fish I had ate before, really “mou dak deng”. The dish is cooked with salted vegetables, cabbage, chilies, ginger, onion, and it gives a really superb taste. My only complaint is there ain’t any fire under the plate to keep the soup hot all the time. Besides, if only better fish were used…..hmmmmmmmmm. 8.5/10

If you come early here, you can have a walk around the beach after your dinner, and enjoy watching sunset with your spouse/fiance/girlfriend/mum/daughter. The place is quite small with only 10 tables available, and even the land is not cement!

Clear peaceful river, not deep enough to swim though.

Lake full with fish inside, either to be used and cook by the restaurant owner, or sold it to others.

Another lake, I really love the scenery here.

1 must be warned that there are many dogs straying around here. It seems that all of them was owned by the owner as all the dogs had a tag on them. However, all of them was not chained up, but fortunately, I was never chased or barked by them.

The crowd here usually starts after 12.30pm, so come earlier to avoid them!

The choices of fish here is not much however, as only fresh water fish was served. You can choose from Tilapia, Patin, Bak Suk Kung or Sutan only. Method of cooking is usually fried, steamed or thai style only too. However, since the fish here are absolutely fresh, they should be cooked that way so that you can taste the freshness and sweetness of the fish to it max.

Deed fried Sutan Fish. The fish was fried deeply until the outside of it was very crunchy, but was not over fried until the meat hardened. Besides, the fish scale of this fish can be consumed too, and it taste nice! 8.8/10

Steamed bak suk kung, taste nice as this dish is all up to the freshness of the fish. 8.2/10

While the method of cooking this steamed patin is normal, but I hate this fish. I just don’t like the texture of the meat, and the fish is too fat to my liking. I will never ever order patin again in the future. 4.0/10

Besides fish, you don’t have any choice of other meat already. So 1 can opt for steamed mushroom if they wish. Although the mushroom is fresh and sweet, but I find that the taste of the fish had overpower it, leading to this steamed mushroom become normal only. 6.1/10

Stir fried Yau Mak, normal lo. 6.5/10

Since it’s quite far to come here especially if you are from Penang, it’s good to give them a call before you start your journey.

You must also prepare a very bumpy ride to the restaurant. Driver car with high clearance, and avoid driving car with lowered springs and low bodykit, or you will have a hard time to drive in there, and your car will definitely be scratched. The entrance is pretty small, so do notice their small green sign board at the entrance. It takes around 5 to 10 minutes to reach the restaurant itself from the entrance. If you never come here before, you might think you had gone the wrong way, but don’t u-turn back, just head straight and at every junction, there will be a small sign board tell you where to turn. Be WARNED again, the road is very bumpy and narrow.

Total Damage: Deep Fried Sutan Fish – RM32, Steamed Bak Suk Gung – RM36, Steamed Patin – RM28, Stir Fried Yau Mak – RM6, Steamed Mushroom – RM6

Operating Hours: 11.30am to 6pm (Closed on Monday)

Location: No.168 Seberang Sungai, Kampung Baru, Sungai Kob, Kulim, Kedah. You will pass by Kulim High Tech Industrial Park on your way to there.
