Continue from previous post….

The next morning, we wanders around for breakfast. There are few stalls beside the road full with people, and hence we decide to have our breakfast there.

The pork leg rice @ RM4 looks really pale and uninteresting when it served, but it’s good. The meat is super tender, the gravy is nice and it just taste amazing! Eat it with their chili, it is just greatttt!! However, the vegetables taste bitter though. 7.5/10

The koay chap @ RM5 in the other hand, does looks interesting with loads of ingredients. It taste good too. 7.0/10

The chicken rice @ RM4 again, looks uninteresting and as a carnivore, the meat is really just too little for me. BUT, the rice itself tasted really good! 7.2/10

After checking out from the hotel and before heading back to Malaysia, we have our lunch at a place where I forgotten. Couldn’t be bother too since the food is mediocre.

Steamed Keng Som Fish, something which I just don’t like how it taste. 4.0/10

Fried Lala….. Normal la. 5.5/10

The forgotten roasted duck and roasted pork until we remind them, which is just meh too. 4.5/10

After this trip, I finally found that food here ain’t that cheap as in the past already. Crazy amount of Malaysians entering this small town had made it become a small tourist place and hence, price soar.

However, people still come to here for the one and only one reasons……..

My next trip to Thailand will definitely be Hatyai, a place which the last time I go is more than 10 years already.

After my first visit to Lot 10 Hutong more than 1 year ago, I still wanted to go back to it everytime I came to Kuala Lumpur since there are just so much food there yet for me to try. Hence, here I am back to this food court again.

This time, instead of trying back the same thing, I and LY opt to try other stuff. Since it’s early, and the food court is pretty empty, we walked around and see what should we have.

I decided to give Kong Tai Singapore Bee Hoon @ RM8.30 a try. It was marvellous as I truly enjoy it. Very fragrant and it was the wet type which I loved. A single flaw of this is I don’t really enjoy the chilli though. 7.8/10

LY had Ho Weng Gei Wan Tan Mee @ RM8.30. We didn’t get to try their noodle the last time, but both of us are not regret that we order it this time. The noodle itself is very good. I however still tend to like Char Siew from Penang though up till now. 8.0/10

Feeling that we yet to treat our tummy good enough, I went ahead to Chong Hwa Hai Nan Chicken Rice stall and order it’s signature chicken rice @ RM13.65. The meat is quite tender and it’s tasty too, but well, I will go back to those in Ipoh anytime.

The rice itself is fragrant too but taste a bit lumpy. 7.0/10

Of course, food here are still expansive considering you are eating hawker food. However, I will still come back here again since I know that I will get not only quantity in terms of choice, but also quality food.

Total Damage: Kong Tai Singapore Bee Hoon @ RM8.30

Ho Weng Gei Wan Tan Mee @ RM8.30

Chong Hwa Hai Nan Chicken Rice @ RM13.65

Operating Hours: Whole day till sold out

Location: Basement of Lot10 Shopping Complex

Alor Setar, a place I rarely venture into, a place which does not appear in most food blog location list, and here I am, wandering here while waiting for the even at Holiday Villa to start, with an empty stomach and growling badly. Without knowing what to eat, or what to expect, I saw that this coffee shop have the most customers, and so I went it, follow the others.

It seems that the chicken rice here is famous, as there are people queuing it up for take away orders, so yea, I will just eat it.

And luckily for me, yea, it taste quite nice. The rice itself is very fragrant, which I like. After all, I am eating Chicken “Rice”, am I?

But yeah, although most of the time I ordered chicken rice, I actually focus more on the chicken, instead of the rice. Why so? Protein > Carbs. Fark carbs.

Although the chicken does not disappoints, it does not excels too. The meat is soft and tender, but well, not the best. Besides, without a good chili sauce to enhance it, it is just slightly above average. 6.8/10

One might ask, am I just simply enter a shop, snap it and post it? Well, not really as I initially doesn’t want to post it since the taste is just average, and I thought that it’s just a normal chicken rice shop.

It’s only until a friend of mine tell me that the chicken rice here is very famous in Alor Setar. So well, since it’s famous, it should suits many others taste right? It might not suit me, but it might suit you guys out there, so if 1 day you end up in my position on how I wander in to this chicken rice stall, you might as well try it!

Total Damage: RM5 as I order for extra meat

Operating Hours: Lunch time

Location: Lorong Padi, Alor Setar, Kedah

I actually don’t really know what’s the name of this rice, hence I simply give it a name. Well, can’t blame me, as the conversation between me and the introducer is as below:

Introducer: Wei, I bring you go eat good rice. Want?

Me: Ooo. OK ar, what rice?

Introducer: Er…. Rice la.

Me: Hmm. I know la, what rice? Economy Rice? Chicken rice? Fried rice?

Introducer: Tell you rice means rice la, as so much for what? It’s rice with xio bak (roasted pork) on top la…happy?

Er…. Ok lo. The stall is small, and passerby will not notice it if not because of the queue in front of the stall.

Unlike normal Roasted Pork Rice you had elsewhere where they give you the whole piece of meat, here they shred it into smaller pieces.

The chicken meat are also shredded too into small pieces. A plate of “the rice” will give you loads of chicken, pork, their special gravy, and yeah, loads of rice!

They are not stingy at all with the gravy, it’s sorta like eating rice in water, which some might not like. However, since I take away mine, I can choose how much gravy I want.

And yea, “the rice” is good! One of the main reason is because since all the meat are shredded into small pieces, each mouthful of rice will be full of meat to. Eat it with the chili given and the gravy, it just taste so damned nice! Highly recommended since it’s really cheap @ RM3.50 only! 7.5/10

Total Damage: RM3.50

Since I had absolutely no idea what’s good in Bangsar, and since I only had the no.11 bus (my leg la) as my sole transport, I still take my chances and search for the famed Anuar’s Curry Fish Head at Lucky Garden, Bangsar. However, after walking for like 30 good minutes, I is shatbrix as I was told they only serve curry fish head at lunch time, while it’s only 10 AM at that time! Sigh….

With hunger and tiredness conquering me, I had no choice and simply enter 1 shop that looks good to me. I had no confidence and are seriously expecting bad food. This is because according to my 5 years stay in Kuala Lumpur/Selangor, most of the time if I were to simply enter a shop for food here, 99% of the time it turn out sucks! No, I am not saying food at Kuala Lumpur sucks, there do have many good food here, it’s just that the average restaurant here serve bad food. Haizz….

Anyway, the food here at Sun Fa Ji, Bangsar is really not bad. I tried to stop LY when she wanted to try the curry mee, all because I had too much bad experience on bad curry mee here. However, the curry mee turns out to be quite nice! At RM5.50, loads of ingredients were given and even coagulated pork blood, nice! The soup is quite good too, yea of course you can’t compare it to the best one in Penang, but it’s certainly 1 of the best I had tried at central Malaysia! 7.0/10

The curry chee cheong fun is consider OK too. Well, since it’s only RM2.50, it’s the plain version, aka no ingredients at all. The curry is similar to the curry mee, but since no ingredients at all make it way too plain. 6.5/10

I also order some roasted and steamed chicken to try. Turn out they are not bad too. I love the chili here. 6.8/10

Well, overall not bad la the food here. If only I drove down, then I will have more choice already, but 4 hours of driving is killing me already. Sigh, where is my driver?!

Total damage: Curry Mee @ RM5.50, Curry Chee Cheong Fun @ RM2.5, Chicken @ RM6

Chicken rice is a common sight in Malaysia, but Thai Style Chicken rice is something different. On one sight, the stall looks like just another chicken stall, but 1 might notice, eh, why is there some Thai Language on the signboard?

Well, when served, it also looks like just another plate of Chicken rice, with a choice of roasted chicken or steamed chicken.

However, 1 shall take note, I find that the stall owner seems to just simply chop the chicken, and never arrange it properly. The chicken was very messy as you can see the meat and bones seems to be tear apart rather than being chopped. Bad presentation will usually spoil one’s appetite, and hence I find that the chicken taste just normal ( and too salty too) before……

I eat the chicken with THIS! This is their special made chili sauce which you won’t be able to find it elsewhere. The chili is made with mainly garlic, chili, vinegar and even some tao cheong, spicier and oilier than the normal one. It’s really appetizing and make everything goes with it nice! Besides, the rice here is very fragrant too. 8.2/10

Another thing that I find very odd here is that the chicken rice stall does not serve taugeh. It’s the stall beside is that sell it, which turns out not bad as it was not overcooked.

The otak-otak here however is just normal. Don’t bother to order it la, come for the chicken rice is good enough. 5.5/10

Overall, this Thai Style Chicken Rice located at Lam Hong Coffee Shop is quite good, especially if you are looking for some special chicken rice.

Total Damage: Chicken Rice for 2 Person @ RM18, Otak-otak @ RM2, Tauge @ RM2

Kek Seng Coffee Shop is one of the old old old coffee shop that still survive up to date, and they served one of the best Ais Kacang (or also known as ABC – Ais Batu Campur) in Penang.

So what makes this plate of “Ais Kacang” so famous? Well, 1 of the 2 scoop of the ice cream is their homemade durian ice cream. The ice cream taste great IF you are a durian lover. It’s nothing like those durian ice cream from nestle, its way smoother, and gives you way more durian flavor. You can tell them not to add in the durian ice cream if you hate the king of fruit.

Besides, the red beans and jagung (sweet corn) toppings is good, and makes the “Ais kacang” just great! However, I find that the jelly (also homemade) is just so so. This plate of “Ais kacang” is way more satisfying than the famous Penang road Teowchew Cendol, simply because the standard here is consistent, unlike the Cendol sometimes taste good, sometimes bad.

The “lor bak” (fried pork roll) however is a disappointing to me. The standard had dropped, the “lor bak” does not have so much pork taste in it as compare to the past. I feel like they are cutting cost in using lesser ingredients. Besides, the single most important thing of a good “lor bak” is the chili paste and “lor” paste in my opinion. But the one here, the chili is not nice, not spicy enough, and the “lor” paste, er….eating it is just like eating plain starch, no other taste. Really way below average for Penang standard.

The chicken rice here is good though. The meat is soft and tender. I especially like the roasted one as the fragrant smell of the roasted chicken is there. The steamed one however is just normal.

However, 1 shall notice the sign board inside the coffee shop, which says – Each table didn’t order drinks, will charge RM0.40. However, they cover up the “each” word, so I am unsure what it means now. Anyway, if you are here, you MUST try the “Ais Kacang“! So just forget the sign board and order it.

Besides chicken rice and “lor bak“, so of the other nice hawker food here is the laksa, char koay teow, koay teow soup and few more. Although there are not the best in Penang, but all of them is still above average. A Must Try! coffee shop in Penang, mainly due to it’s “Ais Kacang“!

Total Damage: Forget the price, but prepare to pay around RM3 for each things you order.

Bean Sprout Chicken, or better known as Nga Choi Gai in Cantonese is something that everyone will always link it with when someone mentioned Ipoh. It’s actually the same thing with Hainanese Steamed Chicken, just that at Ipoh, it was served with bean sprout, and people usually eat it with koay teow instead of rice.

There are actually 2 restaurant famous for selling Nga Choi Gai at Ipoh, which is Lou Wong and Ong Kee. Both are equally famous, and serve real good Nga Choi Gai. Besides, both restaurant are also located at the same road, just directly opposite each other. I really wonder what lead to both boss operating their business at the same place, snatching customer is fun eh?

I actually wanted to try Lou Wong this time around as for the past few times I always dine at Ong Kee. However, looking at the crowd at Lou Wong, I decided to skip it again as I can’t find an empty table there.

Ong Kee seems to have an advantage over here as they have 2 shops, and they are able to serve more customer. People like me who is OK with both shop will surely went to the one where I no need to stand and wait.

When I was eating there, the person who chopping the chicken is working non stop. I really wonder, how many chicken they sell each day.

The steam chicken is really just 1 word, awesome! The meat is firm enough, and the skin is smooth. The meat also won’t give you the feeling that you are eating wood where you will find in most places that serve steam chicken.

In the past, Ipoh people will eat Nga Choi Gai with soy sauce and green chili, which I hate it a lot. However, don’t know since when, they started to serve with chili sauce, and amazingly, the chili sauce is good!

Bean sprouts in Ipoh is actually fatter and juicier than those you ate at other place. Bean sprout lover will definitely love it. For me, it’s just better than others.

The pork balls here are awesome too, each of it is very bouncy and juicy.

Ipoh koay toew, or known as hor fun, is famed for its smoothness. I am not a fan of soup based one, so I order the dry one. To eat the hor fun itself is actually quite tasteless, but once you mix it with the soy sauce of the steam chicken, it is good!

I don’t know what time Ong Kee starts selling, but usually you can have your breakfast there if you don’t mind eating it a bit late. They do open until late till midnight. At weekends or worse, public holiday, Ong Kee is usually pack with people. You will need to stand at the middle of the shop, scout and see which customer are going to finish their food, snatch it at once when they leave or you have to wait longer. Besides, you will also have to leave as soon as you finish your meal, or the waiting customer will be starring and you, as if asking you silently when only you want to stand up. Therefore, in order to have a peaceful meal, come earlier to avoid the crowd if you must visit it during public holiday or weekend.

Restaurant Ong Kee (Tauge Ayam) will definitely get a Must Try! rating from me!

Total Damage: RM25 for 2 person
