GEM restaurant – House of fine Indian cuisine as they claimed, located within the core zone of the Unesco World Heritage Site in Penang – Bishop Street. The environment is beautifully design, with painting and cravings from India.

The design of the cup is very special, and it’s quite heavy too for a cup.

Nandu Rasam @ RM7.90 is certainly an interesting dish. The soup was boiled with the crab together, giving it a very interesting flavor. Besides, although the pepper taste might be a bit overwhelming, but it still taste very nice as the spices used to cook the soup is just wonderful. The crab is very fresh too (although small) but you can enjoy it while waiting for your main dish to come. 7.9/10

The biryani rice @ RM6.90 here is not bad too. Taste wonderful and can be eaten by itself, and of course, eating it with some curry or the leftover soup from Nandu Rasam just make it even more wonderful. 7.5/10

Kerala Style Fish Moilee @ RM15.90 is a bit disappointing though. As far as I know, this coconut milk cooked dish supposedly should have a very creamy taste, which is a bit lacking here. 6.8/10

Chicken Tikka Masala @ RM13.90 is an Indian Curry dish served with Tomato based sauce. To me, the chicken is not tender and juicy enough, but the gravy is nice though. 7.0/10

Garlic Cheese Naan @ RM6.90 which is not bad by itself, but if compare to the one in Chulia Street, it loses miles away. 7.0/10

GEM restaurant, with the big Yellow signboard with red wording on top is easily spotted if you pass by Bishop Street. Notice the waiter waving at me when the shot below is taken?

Mee Thajudeen, definitely 1 of the most famous food in Sungai Petani. However, 1 might ask, what is Mee Thajudeen? Well, I don’t know LOL. I only refer it to as railway station mee goreng and Pasembor.

Both the mee goreng and Pasembor are known as the best here in Sungai Petani, and yes, they never disappoints me whenever I came.

The Pasembor, also known as Rojak (no not the Penang version of Rojak which uses fruits), but instead uses vegetables, potato, beancurd, prawn fritters and egg. It’s mainly down to the gravy that define a good plate of Pasembor. The gravy here is abit sweet though, and it’s blend really well with all the ingredients 7.0/10

The mee goreng is good too. You can enhance the taste by adding a bit of lime, ask them to increase the spiciness and it will be really awesome. 7.1/10

This shop was initially located by the railway near the Sungai Petani Railway Station. However, since they are building new railway track, there were force to move to another place, and hence now they choose to open a shop inside a bungalow! Mamak at bungalow, I doubt i can find this combination elsewhere.

Total Damage: RM2.80 each plate

Banana leaf rice is a traditional vegetarian dish of Southern India. It is usually served with rice on a piece of banana leaf, with few vegetables and curry on top. According to Wikipedia, the banana leaf is used as the coating on the banana leaf released by the hot rice will help in digestion.

The banana leaf rice set itself is usually cheap, as example, here at Passion of Kerala, it only cost RM5.50 for the White Rice Set, and RM6 for the Tomato Rice Set. Bear in mind that the rice is unlimited, same goes to the curry and the side dish for it. However, I don’t find the Tomato rice is nice as it seems besides the color, it taste the same as normal rice. Besides, the rice is also too sticky to my liking. One should also use hand to eat (instead of using fork and spoon like me) to enjoy it more, as finger licking is always good. 6.7/10

The curry fish @ RM4.50 is served in a small claypot. The curry taste good, and the fish is good enough for 3 of us too. 7.0/10

Mutton Masala @ RM5. This is good, the meat is tender, and the curry is very thick, really good to go with rice. 7.6/10

Curry Squid @ RM6, which failed badly. The squid itself ain’t fresh, and neither the blend taste curry help to make it taste better. 5.5/10

Curry Chicken @ RM3.50 is not bad too, although the meat is a bit hard, but nevertheless the curry itself is good. 6.8/10

And finally, I top my lunch up with a glass of Mango Lassi @ RM4.50. Although it’s a bit sour, but it’s still creamy and nice!

The spice they used to cook was placed outside for diners to look and smell them. Just joking….it’s fake.

Passions of erala, oops, the K is gone……

However, although the food is good, but I will NEVER EVER come back here again. Even till now I am still wondering, why I still able to eat there at that point of time?! Well, what happened is, when I reached there, it was only 11am, and the restaurant was not fully ready for business yet. All the chairs inside the restaurant are still up on the table, and the floor is still wet after mopping.

When asked the waiter are they ready, he say yes, and asked us would us want to sit outside (the only table outside the restaurant as shown in the picture) and eat. I say OK until…….. I SAW ON TOP OF THE TABLE, THEY PUT A FREAKING BIG BLACK FLOOR MAT ON IT! Seriously WTFISTHISSHIT? The floor mat was not washed and it was meant to put just at the entrance of the shop where hundreds and thousands of people had walk pass it, step on it, and they put it on top of a table meant for customers to seat and eat?????????????

Again, WTFISTHISSHIT!!!!! Why I still go in and eat? Imagine the hygiene of the place itself when they can do that in front of the customer……duhhhhhh……bye bye Passions of Kerala, although your food is consider good, but this is just too much.

Coconut jelly is already something quite special and rare, but Joez coconut serve something even more special as the jelly is inside the coconut itself!

I will pick this over any other normal coconut stall that sell fresh coconut water as it was served cold. Besides, this type of coconut is usually sweeter than those big green coconut, hence it make this coconut jelly way more refreshing than the normal one.

The coconut looked like just any other coconut you will get when you are at a Thai Restaurant, just that inside 95% of the coconut water had turned into jelly. According to Motormouth and CKLam, the Coconut Jelly is formed by roasting the coconut in a oven, and then was placed in a colder room. I was also told that no additive or artificial chemical is added, neither preservative. Therefore, the Coconut Jelly usually only last few days before it turn sour.

One might not want to eat the Coconut Jelly inside the shop if he/she is too particular, as it’s very small and quite dirty since it’s full with coconut! Besides, they only have 1 table inside the shop only. One must also take note that if you choose to dine here, plastic spoon will be given, and you will have a hard time to scoop the coconut meat as the spoon is too fragile.

Joez Coconut is located at the busy Jalan Dato Keramat road in Penang, and it’s quite hard to notice. It’s just before the police station on your left if you come from Komtar.

You can also give them a call if you still unable to find it. Buy Original please!

Total Damage: RM3.70 for 1

Operating Hours: 11am to 7pm

I accidentally came across to know this restaurant when I am randomly surfing the net, and saw Penangtuapui blog about it. So here am I, at Penang’s small little Indian town, finding Restaurant Karaikudi.I actually found the shop kitchen first before found the main entrance though.

The inside of the restaurant is quite simple, and according to PenangTuaPui, most of the decorations inside are imported directly from India. However, due to I am not an art person, and I am pretty hungry when I am there since I skip lunch, so I just glued my ass on the chair and waiting to order.

Mango Lassi, something you will have to order if you are dining at an Indian restaurant. I however, don’t really like it as it’s quite sour, and not as creamy and milky as how I like my lassi to taste at. Besides, like mostly all lassi, it’s not cold enough for me to enjoy it.

Chettinad style chicken soup that came complimentary with our main course. I personally like this soup very much. It may look watery, but the taste is there.

Another complimentary, papadam with some mint sauce thing. My mum say that it’s abit too salty, but for me it taste just nice.

Our main dish. Sorry, I forget what it’s call already, but I know the price! It’s RM16 for the normal one, and RM13 for the vegetarian version. It’s really worth it for the price, and best thing is, it’s good! Look at the stuff you get by ordering this, you get nan, white rice and briyani rice for the filling part. You get curry chicken, curry, yogurt, soup and some others that I don’t know the name. When served, you can take out all the small bowl and put aside, and ta da….you get banana leave rice!

Ladies finger pepper fry is something recommended by the waiter. It may look very simple, but amazingly, it taste great! The pepper smell is not strong, just enough for the taste, and since the ladies finger are fried, it’s crunchy, making the dish awesome!

The mutton chukka varuval. Another great dish. Although it’s a bit spicy, but the meat is tender enough. However, some lamb hater might still don’t like it as although the spices had cover most of its pungent smell, the smell is still there for those sensitive lamb hater nose.

Prawn masala, cooked with spice and tomato gravy. The prawns used are quite big and fresh. Besides the gravy itself is nice already. Funny thing is when my mum eat it, she just eat it with the gravy itself and not noticing that there are prawns inside, and yet she still say its good.

Chicken hm…..sorry, forgotten the name. The waiter did not give us the receipt when he give back the change, so I forget the name of this dish liao. Anyway, the style of cooking is ok, but the meat is a bit too hard.

Restaurant Karaikudi is a Must Try! restaurant for Indian food lover, and even if you are not a huge fan of Indian food, you shall try it, and who knows you might just fall in love with it?
