Hence, I am absolutely fed-up with the sub par food I tried at Hong Kong. Hence, this time, I came prepared……sorta.

1 particular person helped me a lot on planning my itinerary, which is Northasian, the forum + blog owner of AllAboutHongKong. Just go over her (I think….) forum, and you can ask her for advice, all for free and most importantly, prompt and good advice. Thanks again, Northasian.

It’s a food court in the Mong Kok Cooked Food Market, and finding a place to sit is real hard…..even when ‘dap toi’ aka sharing table with others.

The first thing 1 should do at Hong Kong is definitely getting the Octopus card. It’s something similar as our Touch n Go card, but far more convenient since many vendors are accepting it. I get 1 each for me and LY for the sake of convenient purpose of KTM rides.

I also straight away reload HKD500 for my octopus card since I heard that many restaurants accept Octopus card for payment. Also, I can use it at 7-11, and best part, by paying just a bit, I can cash back all the leftover amount in the card anytime I want.

For most of the food stalls here, you were need to collect your food yourself. But I was told that they will sent it to me when it was ready. However, the wait is so long (around 20 minutes) that we wonder, is it that I listen wrongly? LY went and asked again, and we are assured that they will sent it to us when it’s done.

It’s usually easy for me to hunt for food since I am using GPS ( Thanks a lot to guys from Malsing and Malfree). Just set it and go.

But it’s totally different in Hong Kong. Without Papago, I am helpless. I did subscribe to the PCCW wireless, where there are over 9000 hotspot in all over Hong Kong. BUT it’s still not convenient at all. The range of wifi is so short, and hence I can’t really use google map with it. 3G is so much a win over wifi.

The Curry Pork in Bread set (咖哩豬柳農夫包) @ HKD48 is well worth all the foot work. Most of the time it’s quite empty, since peeps in Sungai Petani will go to Tesco (we got 2 tesco here okay?!) or Giant for grocery, and Central Square if they want more. However, during festive seasons, those that hate crowd will come here since most places will be way way too overcrowded.

Well, guess it’s enough talk of shopping mall. This small stall is those that you won’t bother to give it a second look even if you walk past it. It’s only operate during dinner time, and are run by Chinese from China.

They do served rice, but you should try their porridge when you are here. Although it’s just plain porridge, but the porridge itself is very damned smooth. Just superb if you eat it along with the main dish! 8.0/10

They also served Claypot Yee Mee here, which is a bit like the style of Gong Bo Chicken. You can opt for Sang Yee, Zhui Ge (field chicken aka frog), or Wong Sin as the ingredients. The mee itself is cooked to perfection, and the soup itself is nice too.

Oh, do tell them to prepare it spicier if you are the type that love spicy food. And if you ever order this, forget about their Gong Bo version of other dish, since it will be the same. 7.2/10

The Steamed Zhui Ge (field chicken or frog) is just superb. It’s steamed with some Chinese herbs and it’s just taste so nice. I absolutely love the gravy here and can wallop the whole plate of rice just with the gravy.

However, since Zhui Ge should not be cooked too long, with the fire underneath the plate constantly warming up the dish, you should finish this dish as fast as possible or the meat will become too hard and won’t taste as nice as it should be. 8.0/10

And finally, the dish I loved here most, their Signature Steamed Sang Yee. The fish meat are de-boned and are boneless. I absolutely love this too, and again, just the gravy, is enough for me! The gravy too have some slight hint of Chinese herb taste, which makes it much much better than most normal steamed fish. 8.5/10

It’s had since become one of my favourite place for dinner ever since I had been introduced here. Reasons is usually the soup taste is not to my liking, and the noodle is too hard.

However, once forced to have Chili Pan Mee, which is the dried version 3 years back at a place I forgotten, neither did I remember the shop name. I only remember that it’s quite good, and the shop is full of people. Ever since, I started to eat Pan Mee, but only the dried version, and MUST be spicy.

Then only after some time, I only know that Chili Pan Mee is one of the most famous food in Kuala Lumpur, with 2 of the most famous one are Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee and Super Kitchen Chili Pan Mee.

I chose Super Kitchen Chili Pan Mee due to I had read way too many bad reviews in terms of service by Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee. Only when I am here, I only noticed that their fierce and infamous rival - Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee are just opposite of them.

As always, my timing for hunting food is usually perfect. Both Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee and Super Kitchen Chili Pan Mee are super empty when I am here, around 10AM ++. Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee got 1 customer while Super Kitchen Chili Pan Mee got 0 customers.

I can fully understand that someone who are working in Kuala Lumpur who has fixed lunch hour to dine here and join the crowd, but I absolutely don’t understand those who have flexible lunch hour, why must you come during their peak period, and then only complain about slow and bad service?

Most of the Chili Pan Mee had the exact same main ingredients, which is a sunny side-up egg, fried anchovies and minced meat.

I never tried eating it without the chili flakes, but after 3 or 4 spoonful of it, it’s as spicy as it looks. Since the Pan Mee itself doesn’t actually have much taste, hence it’s all up to the chili flakes which makes the difference. I can’t say that I absolutely loved it, but yes, to me, it’s good.

It’s spicy, which I like. The anchovies is really crispy, and the minced meat is good too. Overall, they mixed up nicely. It can be a bit salty too if too many chili flakes are mixed into it. 7.7/10

Total Damage: RM10++ (forgotten the exact price)

Location: 33, Jalan Dewan Sultan Sulaiman 1, off Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur

Contact: 03 – 2697 0998

Google Map:

Jalan Sg. Well, now I now, what I gonna eat for my breakfast in few days time. However, this early morning Bah Kut Teh at the morning of Christmas is the single most expansive Bah Kut Teh I ever had, which cost me almost RM1000 on it.

As always, the feast, early in the morning. I actually leave my hotel in Kuala Lumpur at around 6.15AM, again, just to avoid the crowd.

One of the major difference between Ah Her and here is the taste of Chinese medicine. At Ah Her, the soup itself is like full with pork taste only, while the soup here at Mo Sang Kor got a slight hint of Chinese medicine taste, so it’s usually up to which version you like. Both of them, the soup are equally thick and super flavourful.

The ‘sai kuat’ (small bone) is awesome too with the thick skin and fat and tenderrrrs meat!

The ‘pai kuat’ (pork ribs) here is a tad better than Ah Her though, as the meat is more tasty.

The ‘dai kuat’ (big bone) however, is too fat even to my liking. Look at the fat on it! Its crazy, but nevertheless I still love it although I sorta give the fat a go.

We also opt for some pork intestines this time instead of pure chicken feet only, which are both awesome!

The same thing that’s gonna happens here from what I heard is – ask for extra soup, you are gonna get scold if you are unlucky. Same trick, order for more rice, or order another bowl of meat. For me, I will always prefer super flavourful soup with limited amount over super watery soup but you can add as many as you want.

So some might ask, which do I prefer? I personally prefer Ah Her over Mo Sang Kor, but LY prefer the other way round as she liked the Chinese medicine taste on the soup here. So again, I guess it’s up to what you like. 9.0/10

And don’t let the picture fool you, it was still early at around 7AM, so the crowd is still not there yet.

So what’s up with the most expansive Bah Kut Teh which cost me almost RM1000 while we only pay RM35 to the shop?

Yea, besides famous for it’s Bah Kut Teh, Klang is also famous for it’s potholes! GOSH! A big pothole in the middle of the road which one is supposed to cruise on it at around 70km/h?

It cost 2 of my tyre to burst off and there goes my Christmas morning. I had to wait by the road side until the tow truck come, pull it to the shop, wait for them to fix and pay RM960 for 2 piece of tyre to them.

RM960 + RM35 = RM995, haven’t break the 4 digit yet, but well….I guess I just gotta say I am lucky as the pothole doesn’t cause my car to spin, and there are so many workshop open in the morning of Christmas day right?

Total Damage: RM35 for 2 person (Haven’t include the cost of 2 tyres)

Operating Hours: 6.00am – 12.00pm

Location: 145, Jalan Chan Ah Choo, Pandamaran

Google Map:

Lau Yew Crab Meat Hor Fun @ Bukit Mertajam

Bukit Mertajam

Chinese

Cuisine

Food and Drinks

Hawker

Hor Fun

Location

Malaysia

Penang

crab meat hor fun

Dinner

Food

fried chicken

A person can be given the best ingredient, the best cooking tools, the world most craved for recipe, but if he ain’t got the passion to cook, or just don’t have enough skill, the outcome of the dish just won’t taste nice. By the looks at it, the amount of crab meat given and char siew are generous. Besides, it looks colorful too, if only there are more greens on it. Something like this should be awesome!

Well, not really. The hor fun itself is really really bad. It’s too dry and the hor fun seems to be soaked too long. It just doesn’t taste right. It seems to me that they already fried it for some time, and forget to serve it hence the hor fun soaked up all the gravy, leading it to be muddy. Yes, the crab meat use is sweet, and the char siew taste nice too but like I say, if you are a bad chef, or you didn’t put your whole heart into frying the dish, you can be using the best ingredients and most awesome recipe in the world but you are still unable to cook something taste great.

This is what I feel from eating it, I just find that the chef is just simply frying it for the sake of selling it. Seriously, something like this should taste great, and if he can think of using this recipe to cook it, he should be able to do fine. Besides, the vegetables in it is like….er…..where?

Seriously, it will be a total failure if not because of crab meat are used. Maybe the chef mood is bad that day, or another person is still in learning progress is frying it, I don’t know. If any of you guys had tried it lately and found improvement in it, please let me know, as I had high hopes that this will taste awesome. 5.0/10

Oh by the way, it only cost RM3.30 for this amount, which is surprisingly cheap with the serving and amount of ingredients use!

While waiting for our hor fun to arrive, we notice that the fried chicken stall here is having good business as customers even need to queue up for sometime to buy it. Since I am traveling from Sungai Petani, I timed myself well. I MUST reach Pandamaran by 5PM, or hell will break through.

Reasons? I had heard too many stories saying that Ah Her will be super crowded if you arrive anytime after 5.30PM, and I myself know well that if I were want to enter Klang after working hours, I might be stuck in jam for hours! Besides, since I had totally no idea where is Pandamaran, or how to go there, and I am only armed with my iPhone with PapagoM6 installed in it, it might take me sometime to actually find the place.

Hence, I started my journey at 12PM from Sungai Petani, all the way down…..to my holy place – Klang.

Stopping only once for pee and a light lunch, and with little cars on the road, great GPS, I reach in front of Ah Her Bah Kut Teh at around 4.30PM.

Since they only start business at 5.00PM, we waited in the car until 4.45PM. At this time, the stall is still…..very empty.

While waiting, we had some tea. Tea is essential while having Bah Kut Teh man, as it is believed being able to dilutes or dissolves the copious amount of fat consumed in it.

At around 4.55PM, we order our portion, and it arrive in just a while, all thanks to there ain’t much customer….yet!

The rice served is oily rice, which is very fragrant and flavorful even if u just eat it by itself.

Unlike many other place, the Bah Kut Teh here does not come with 1 big claypot. Instead, it come with small bowls with the cuts you order. From what I read, it seems this is how the original Bah Kut Teh looks like.

And well, since we are having Bah Kut Teh, which means pork ribs tea, of course I must order pork ribs! However, it’s a total let down, and I still hold on my stand that I hate pork ribs in Bah Kut Teh. Reason is the meat ain’t that tender and it’s a bit tasteless to me.

However, no the hell way I am saying Ah Her Bah Kut Teh is bad, no way! It’s now top in my list of the best soup Bah Kut Teh I had ever tried. Only the ribs were a let down, but the ‘dai kuat’ (big bone) taste awesome! The meat is super tender and soft, and taste much much better, more flavorful and more porkish (is that a a word? seems not lol).

The same goes to ‘sai kuat’ (small bone), which is just as wonderful. Although these two big and small bones come with the more fatty pork skin, but well, this is how one should eat pork. The skin and fat certainly makes the meat taste so so much better. Lean meat is for pussies! Fark the fat, fark the calorie, I can workout later…..yes….I will….well, yea, I think I wil…..

3 serving is just not enough for me and LY, I just couldn’t have enough of it. Bar with me, ALL Bah Kut Teh in Sungai Petani SUCKS! Yes, they all sucks! No matter how deep my craving for Bah Kut Teh is, I still won’t find those that sold at my hometown nice. Every single time I went for those Bah Kut Teh in Sungai Petani, it just lead me to hate it more.

Hence, we order another serving, but this time it’s ain’t pork, but chicken feet. It taste awesome too as the chicken feet is cooked to really really tender and taste super nice!

Oh, and you might notice too, man the soup is so little?! How can you call that Bah Kut Teh?

Or you might had heard wonderful stories that if you ever asked for extra soup in most of Bah Kut Teh shops in Klang, you will get scolded.

But before you try to get annoyed, or scold them being arrogant or whatever, let me tell you something.

It’s not because they are proud, or stingy (since it’s only water), it’s because they care about the quality of their soup. Why do I say so?

See the pot over there? No, the pot behind the kettle. Did you see that it’s fully stuff with meat in it? Yes, that’s it. They did not cook extra soup, add extra water so that they have more soup.

The soup in the pot is all they have. The water added is only enough to cover the meat when it was cooked. So how do you expect them to give you extra soup? If they were to give, by the time the soup is dried up, they will still have 3/4 pot of meat unable to sell!

It’s all about quality and not quantity, and hence the soup here is super tasty and it’s very condensed, come with great aroma and flavor. Unlike most other Bah Kut Teh, where the soup is so damned watery!

So before you curse them to the mad because you get scolded for asking extra soup, or complaining that the soup is so little, think of how the dish is cooked first. How can you expect your condensed milk taste the same if you add loads of water to it?

However, there’s a way for asking for extra soup without being scolded or ignored. Order an extra serving of rice, and they will give you extra soup, still spoonful worth of soup though.

The crowd started to grow while we having our meal, and this is the crow at 5.30PM. So expect to stand and wait for a seat if you come late, or worse, was told that the Bah Kut Teh are sold off!

It’s still simply the best soup version of Bah Kut Teh that I had tried, but I do think that, there might be some room of improvement to make the meat even more tasty….am I being ridiculous? 9.2/10

Total Damage: RM38 for 2 person

Operating Hours: 5.00PM till sold out (around 7PM maybe)

Location: Jalan Polis, Pandamaran, Klang (if you got a GPS, just search for the Police station of Pandamaran).
