Bi Ah Dong (Mabrown) Restaurant @ Sungai Petani
Bi Ah Dong? Mabrown? I always find that this restaurant name is very funny. In Chinese the restaurant was read as “We Ye Tong”, or “Bi Ah Dong” in Hokkien, but in English it was known as Mabrown, and which I always read as “Mabolo” when I was still small, err….what? Well, in any case, this restaurant had started their business for a long time already, as long as Restaurant Sai Gao, and if not mistaken, they are 1 of the 1st restaurant in Sungai Petani that provide air-corn room for their customers.
However, in terms of customers, Sai Gao always had the upper hand. I had also notice most of the time Sai Gao is the first choice of most customers, and only if they can’t find a place there then they will only opt for Restaurant Bi Ah Dong. Besides, whenever Sai Gao is off, the business here will be tremendously good.
However, I still love both restaurant, and I find that both of them got their specialties that make me always come back to them.
They had a few ready cooked dishes, such as those you found in economy rice stall, and the beancurd below is 1 of them. Although it’s cold already (duh obviously) but it still taste nice. Even though the skin is not crispy, but the gravy is good. I take it as an appetizer before my meal. 7.5/10
The eggplant is another ready made dish. However, I find that it’s so-so only as it’s a bit tasteless. But still, ok la. 6.2/10
Although Char Siew and Roasted Pork are their specialty, but it’s not good. Well, it’s not that bad, but when you claim it’s you specialty and always promote to your customer, your customer will except something really good, which is not the case here. The roasted pork is just plain normal, but the Char Siew is lacking of taste, not sweet enough. 5.5/10
Ahh, my favorite dish, also 1 of their specialty, steamed fish with dao cheong. It’s a lovely dish, and the gravy goes really well with rice. The fish is fresh too, besides, you can also opt for extra beancurd on it. If you are a spicy food lover, you can ask them to put extra chili to make it even more appetizing! 8.4/10
The interior of here is definitely better than Sai Gao, with same great food (well, to be honest, Sai Gao better la) and a cheaper price. Besides, they do have a room with air-corn, and although its a small room which can only accommodate 5 tables or so, but most people tend to sit outside so finding a place inside ain’t really that hard.
Sigh at the name….really tak faham why la some restaurant, the Chinese name and English name totally different one. Sigh…..

The name MaBrown was derived from a nickname affectionately given to the original owner’s wife by British servicemen who were stationed in the Sungei Petani military camp in the ealrly 60′s.
These servicemen frequented the restaurant as it served good food and they called her Ma Brown (Mother Brown). Hence the unique name.
whao, never know that. thanks for telling
Try also YIK WAH, an eatery located at a corner shop in the junction between Jln Pengkalan and Jln Dewa.
Entrance is by the side of the building instead from the front.
YIK WAH, now renamed SIN YIK WAH sells good and delicious food for lunch. Always packed with hungry patrons as tables are limited since they only occupy slightly more than half the shop space, even though they own the whole premise.
One popular item is “Chicken Rice”. This is not the usual type which we identify with, but is rice steamed in small metal containers, served with pieces of chicken cooked in a tasty light sauce, and topped up with char siew, siew yoke and siew cheong…all for a princely sum of RM3/= per portion.
Many other dishes are available at very reasonably prices…nothing that will burn a hole in your pocket.
Go try the food before they decide to close shop as the guys and girls running the place are getting on with age!
