Hock Seng Rojak @ Penang

Posted in Chinese, Cuisine, Food and Drinks, George Town, Hawker, Location, Malaysia, Penang, Rojak by samlee860407 on February 26, 2010

Hock Seng Rojak, the self proclaimed Rojak King. The small white board under their signboard, they also boast that their Rojak is world no.1 taste! However, how many times had we seen that restaurants and stall claimed that they are the best but utterly failed in the end? This is not the case for Hock Seng Rojak.

Their Rojak is really really good. The prawn sauce is extremely thick. Besides, they add in not only peanuts but dried shrimps too, which make the rojak taste even better! However, I find it a bit too spicy when I ate it the 1st time, but slowly it become OK. 8.0/10

Sky Hotel Char Siew @ Penang

Posted in Char Siew and Roasted Pork, Chinese, Cuisine, Food and Drinks, George Town, Hawker, Location, Malaysia, Penang by samlee860407 on February 25, 2010

Sky hotel, such a nice name, but don’t be fooled by its name. Sky hotel is just a budget of the budget hotel, which is also some place I will never stay in it. No offense to those backpackers out there, but I will rather not to travel if you want me to stay in this type of place.

However, I am still here at Sky hotel located at Chulia street, just because of the famous Char Siew rice here.

When I ordered the Char Siew, I was asked, fat or lean, and I regretted very much by ordering the lean version. The Char Siew is good, but it’s too lean leading to not juicy enough. 7.0/10

Kheng Pin Loh Bak @ Penang

Posted in Chinese, Cuisine, Food and Drinks, George Town, Hawker, Location, Loh Bak, Malaysia, Penang, Wantan Mee by samlee860407 on February 24, 2010

Loh bak is something that most Penangtie like to order when eating their main such as Hokkien Mee, Char Koay Teow, Curry Mee and many others. Loh Bak is actually marinated minced pork wrapped with bean-curd, but when people order, they will usually also order other such as fried beancurd, prawn fritters, century egg and many others.

However, these days, even in Penang, it’s quite hard to find really good Loh Bak, and luckily Kheng Pin Cafe at Penang road still able to maintain it’s standards after years. The variety here is quite a lot compare to others, and each piece is very crispy. Besides, the flour here is not overwhelming until you can only taste flour but not the meat itself. 7.7/10

Green House Hokkien Mee @ Penang

Posted in Chinese, Cuisine, Food and Drinks, George Town, Hawker, Hokkien Mee (Prawn Mee), Location, Malaysia, Penang by samlee860407 on February 23, 2010

Green house Hokkien Mee, located at Burmah road, was regarded as one of the best Hokkien Mee by many Penangties. One of the specialty here is you can opt for many extra ingredients such as “pai kuat“, roasted pork and many others, which makes the Hokkien Mee more yuummy.

Not only the coffee shop was named Green House, but the Hokkien Mee stall is also in bright green color. However, to me, this bowl of Hokkien Mee is really so so only, really nothing to shout about despite it’s fame. However, can’t deny that the roasted pork here is good. 6.0/10

Bus Station Beef Noodle @ Sungai Petani

Posted in Beef Noodle, Chinese, Cuisine, Food and Drinks, Hawker, Kedah, Location, Malaysia, Sungai Petani by samlee860407 on February 22, 2010

According to many people, in Sungai Petani, there’s only 1 place where the beef noodle there is worth eating, which is the one at the bus station of Sungai Petani. However, shame on me, I never heard of it until recently, someone who was not born and breed in Sungai Petani, neither he stayed in Sungai Petani before told me this, and only after that I found out that almost everyone in Sungai Petani know about it, besides me…….

It was sold by a pair of uncle aunty, and they had been selling it for more than 20 years.

Joez Coconut Jelly @ Penang

Posted in Cuisine, Desert, Food and Drinks, George Town, Indian, Location, Malaysia, Penang by samlee860407 on February 18, 2010

Coconut jelly is already something quite special and rare, but Joez coconut serve something even more special as the jelly is inside the coconut itself!

I will pick this over any other normal coconut stall that sell fresh coconut water as it was served cold. Besides, this type of coconut is usually sweeter than those big green coconut, hence it make this coconut jelly way more refreshing than the normal one.

The mangosteen salad @ RM32. Man this is really nice. The mangosteen itself is fresh and sweet, eat it with the prawns and it’s whao!! Really great stuff to open your appetite! 9/10

Restaurant Yong Shu @ Sungai Petani

Restaurant Yong Shu, a place where I and my family will patronize at least twice a month ever since year 2002. The reason we love this place so much is due to the price is very reasonable, food is serve fast, and its good!

The really yummy and lemak curry fish head. Love it a lot. Basically every time we order this, we will bottom up the gravy. Awesome! 9.0/10

Steamed egg. The egg is quite smooth but it’s just average at most. 6.5/10

Tian Tian Liang Wan Tan Mee @ Sungai Petani

Posted in Chinese, Cuisine, Food and Drinks, Hawker, Kedah, Location, Malaysia, Sungai Petani, Wantan Mee by samlee860407 on February 12, 2010

The Wan Tan Mee, sold by Ah Ngau in Tian Tian Liang Coffee shop, is definitely the most famous Wan Tan Mee in Sungai Petani already.

The crowd here every morning is just amazing, usually if you are unlucky you will need to wait for 30 minutes to 1 hour for a plate of mee. To many people in Sungai Petani, it just not worth to wait so long for it. However, 1 thing I like about this shop is they do give a number when you order.

This will make sure that they won’t make any mistake by serving customer who came later than the earlier one. Besides, by having number on each table, a customer can slightly anticipate how long it will take for their order to reach.
